More Jamaican firms now certify through local bodies

Local bodies have certified Jamaican public agencies and private companies to ISO 9001. Certifying at home is now a mainstream, cheaper route.

Jamaican organisations used to assume an overseas certification body was the only credible route to ISO 9001. Public reporting says otherwise: the Companies Office of Jamaica certified with the Bureau of Standards Jamaica, Tax Administration Jamaica certified four offices through the National Certification Body of Jamaica, and batches of private companies have been certified locally since.

The practical difference is travel, currency and turnaround. Local audits are quoted in Jamaican dollars, scheduled without international travel, and surveillance visits are easier to fit around an operating calendar. For a domestic firm with domestic customers, that is usually the whole argument.

The case for an international body is narrower than it looks: it matters when an overseas customer names an accreditation mark in a contract, or when a group parent standardises certification across countries.

Whichever route you take, keep the consultant and the certifier separate. A firm that builds your management system cannot audit it, and any proposal implying otherwise should end the conversation.
